The tourism vessel went missing on a trip to the Titanic.
The U.S. Coast Guard has joined other law enforcement agencies in the search for a tourism submersible that vanished on Sunday. The vessel, used to take tourists to see the wreckage of the Titanic, was carrying give people. The Coast Guard said a C-130 crew is searching for the vessel roughly 900 miles off Cape Cod, Massachusetts, approximately 435 miles south of St. John’s, Newfoundland.
The submersible, which weighs around 20,000 pounds and is capable of diving 13,210 feet is reported to have a 96-hour (4 days) oxygen supply. The Coast Guard reported that the crew of the ship that ferried the submarine to the dive site “lost contact with them approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes into the vessel’s dive.”
Rear Admiral John Mauger said, “It is a remote area and it is a challenge to conduct a search in that remote area, but we are deploying all available assets to make sure that we can locate the craft and rescue the people on board.”
